Warm Snow, produced by BadMudStudio, is a perfect example of why we shouldn’t judge a game by its title. Warm Snow is a very realistic descriptive title. A strange phenomenon occurred in June of the 27th year of the Longwu Era. Snowflakes falling from the sky, when touched, do not melt but bring a warm feeling. Those who inhale “Warm Snow” will become insane and turn into monsters.
Warm Snow is a Roguelike action game set in a dark oriental fantasy world. Players will take the role of Bian, a warrior on a mission to defeat the Five Great Clans and restore order to a world affected by warm, spooky snowflakes. The hack-n-slash element in 2.5D space with a top-down perspective brings exciting and new experiences to players.
Players are tasked with defeating all enemies in the area before choosing a path, each path will contain a unique weapon or power. Each room is filled with monsters, but players can gather passive and active power-ups along the way in preparation for each level’s final boss encounter.
An important combat weapon that players need to master is the flying sword. Flurry mode opens up new combat options, turning the sword into a ranged weapon. When using this option, the sword can be taken to a specific location and restored. Therefore, tracking the position of swords as they fall and calculating the time until you can use it again is an essential skill to improve combat effectiveness.
Another attractive feature is stealth attack. This mode will be effective for melee-style runs and enhanced offensive combat. Three different Cults will change gameplay as well as impact weapon improvements. Another indispensable combat feature is the Break system. A red icon will appear when enough damage is done to the opponent, signaling the next attack with significantly greater damage will be the decisive one to take down the enemy.
Throughout the game, you will find artifacts related to the strange warm snow phenomenon. Some items can help the player respawn with weapons, combat abilities, and powers. Not only that, your skills and weapons can also be “upgraded” thanks to magical attributes such as lightning, fire or potions by collecting artifacts. Weapons vary in rarity, from common to almost impossible. There are many skins with different attributes, qualities and enhancements. However, they all use swords, so the variety of the game can be limited in this respect.
There are also Relics that only last for one playthrough and disappear when the character is defeated. Your character has 4 skill boxes to use Relics including: Core, Strength, Agility and Skill. There are more than ten different types of Relics, and each Relic has four uses. In addition, each type has additional attributes depending on the power-ups you use. When you win a new relic, you can convert and reuse each relic as many times as you like.
While the opening may seem daunting and overwhelming to new players, you’ll soon have access to healing gourds that replenish almost half your health. In addition, just before each boss battle, players can visit the Trader, where you can buy blood, battle weapons, and support relics.
However, the gameplay of Warm Snow has not really brought the feeling of “winning” like other games of the same genre. Some localization errors clearly affect the game circuit as well as the way the story leads. Although not as “slick” as other roguelike games, Warm Snow is still a game that can keep you busy for hours. The battle system gives players freedom in encounters with attractive rewards, this is a hidden gem waiting for gamers to discover.
