Who is the leader of the Avengers group in the Marvel movies? With this question you might think of Captain America, but actually Steve’s position as the leader of the Avengers team was replaced in 2016 to 2023 in the MCU.
Here are the leaders of the Avengers team in the Marvel movies:
1. Steve Rogers
Steve Rogers was the leader of the Avengers for most of Phases 1 through 3 of the MCU. He has been the leader since 2012, when the first Avengers team was officially formed. Even so, there was a time when Steve wasn’t considered the leader of the Avengers. Captain America has not been the official leader of the Avengers since 2016 (due to the events of Civil War until 2023.
Even so, Steve seems to be the leader of the Avengers team again in 2023. Especially in the final battle, and says “Avengers assemble”.
2. Tony Stark
Tony Stark is considered the leader of the Avengers from 2016 to 2018 in the MCU world. Stark still seems to be counted as the official leader of the Avengers until the beginning of Endgame, still set in 2018. From 2018 to 2023, there is another character who has become the leader of the Avengers.
3. Natasha Romanoff
Natasha Romanoff is the leader of the Avengers team from 2018 to 2023. Okoye, Captain Marvel, Nebula, and Rocket Raccoon are officially members of the Avengers during the Natasha era.
At the beginning of Endgame (about 26 minutes for the Disney+ version), we see how Natasha heard and responded to reports from James Rhodes, Okoye, Captain Marvel, Nebula, and Rocket. After Natasha sacrifices herself for the Soul Stone, Steve Rogers seems to be the leader again. Especially in the final battle, where Steve said “Avengers gather” with the Avengers and other heroes who arrived at the battle site.
Now, after Avengers: Endgame in 2019, the journey of the first generation Avengers has also ended. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) decides to go to space, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) are dead, Captain America (Chris Evans) is old and weak and has given up his shield, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) retired again. New superheroes are in dire need of an element capable of leading and connecting the members. We will wait and see who will be the leader of the Avengers group in phase 4 and later stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
