There are interesting events in the final battle in Avengers: Endgame. One of them is the event that Thanos’ blade can damage Captain America’s shield.
So why did Thanos’ blade break Captain America’s shield?
1. Situation in Endgame
In Endgame, Thanos got into trouble with Captain America while he was holding Mjolnir. But then the mad Titan was able to strike again. Captain America dodged Thanos’ brutal slashes with his shield, but Cap’s Vibranium shield was damaged.
This moment surprised many fans, because Cap’s shield can often resist various enemy attacks.
2. Explanation given by Joe Russo
In an interview with Comicbook.com, Joe Russo as one of the directors of Endgame offered an explanation for the above problem. According to Russo, Thanos is a thousand-year-old character who has fought with everyone in the universe, and is the greatest. He can be seen as “Genghis Khan” in the universe, so the weapon he uses is also extremely powerful.
Russo then said that Thanos knew Eitri, he visited Eitri to make the Infinity Gauntlet. Since then, many people have suspected that the Titan made Eitri create a sword for him? This is entirely possible. Joe Russo also emphasized that what’s interesting is that Thanos’ blade can destroy Captain America’s shield.
So based on Joe Russo’s answer, it looks like Eitri is likely the creator of Thanos’ blade. It should be remembered that Eitri previously created the Infinity Gauntlet and Stormbreaker, so it’s not surprising that this character can create a blade that can destroy Cap’s Vibranium shield. Even so, so far we still don’t know what materials were used to create Thanos’ blade.
3. We’ve also seen the Vibranium weapon that can damage Captain America’s shield before
Captain America’s shield is made of Vibranium. However, we have seen before that weapons made of Vibranium can also damage this shield. In Civil War, Black Panther’s claws made their mark on Captain America’s shield. And you know, Black Panther’s claws are also made of Vibranium.
The situation with Black Panther shows that weapons made of Vibranium can completely damage Captain America’s shield in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So is this a sign that Thanos’ blade is also made of Vibranium?
As mentioned in the second point, so far we still don’t know what the material of Thanos’ blade is. However, we can simply understand that: Thanos’ blade can be made of Vibranium or made from even more materials than Vibranium.
