There are many legends surrounding Lake Baikal. The most special of them is the story of a gold block up to 1,600 tons at the bottom of the deepest lake in the world, this treasure is estimated to be worth up to 90 billion USD.
The Guinness Book of Records has recognized Lake Baikal in Russia as the deepest lake in the world, with an area the size of Belgium and containing up to 20% of the freshwater on Earth. Therefore, this place also has special names such as “Fountain of the World”, “Moon Lake”, “Beihai”, “Pearl of Russia”, “Sea Lake of Tears”. ..
Located in the eastern Siberia of Russia, Baikal is a unique natural wonder and has a unique beauty in the world. Many famous songs, poems and folk songs were written about this lake. But hidden deep inside that beauty are countless mysteries. At a depth of thousands of meters at the bottom of Lake Baikal, hidden mysteries still haunt the scientific world.
There are many legends about the origin of 1,600 tons of gold in the lake bed. In 1917 AD, many nobles representing the old feudal forces in Russia tried to collect a lot of gold and silver treasures to emigrate to the West. As they passed through Lake Baikal, unfortunately encountered an enemy in pursuit. At this time, the nobles left a total of 1,600 tons of gold sunk directly to the bottom of Lake Baikal.
There is also another version that this is the amount of gold collected and owned by Tsar Nicholas II himself. On the way to transport them to hide in another place, when passing through Lake Baikal, they encountered melting ice. Because the lake bed was too wide and could not get out in time, all 1,600 tons of gold and the escorting army sank to the bottom of the lake.
Many people always covet this huge amount of money but eventually give up. Experts say that it’s not that they don’t want to pick it up, but they don’t dare for the following scary reasons.
The first reason is due to the structure and location of the lake. In 2015, according to people around the area discovered, the deepest point of Lake Baikal could reach 1,637 meters and the total volume of the lake exceeded 2.36 billion cubic meters. For individual units, there is not enough potential to dive down to find gold.
The second reason is that inside Lake Baikal, there are still many species of freshwater animals in the Tertiary period (about 63 million years ago), such as Baikal seals, Arctic white trout, Omul white trout, fish sharks, etc. Most of these fish are very dangerous. Many people who intend to find treasure have given up after hearing that there are many dangerous animals here.
The third reason is: If real gold is found, to whom does this huge amount of gold belong? Because Lake Baikal was selected as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1996. From this perspective, Lake Baikal seems to belong to everyone and to all humanity. If you look at the map, Lake Baikal is located on the territory of both the Republic of Buryatia and Irkutsk Oblast. Therefore, there is no way that a unified statement about who or what country the lake will belong to without causing controversy.
According to folklore, this lake is protected by a divine force that can help prolong human life. Therefore, there are many people who are willing to soak in water at a temperature of 5 degrees Celsius, to be immortal. There are even reports of UFOs and aliens in Lake Baikal. Interestingly, the stories related to UFOs here all come from secret documents of the Soviet Navy.
So, no matter if this legend is true, or what is the truth behind the mysteries surrounding the lake, just because science and technology has not yet developed, no one dares to think about embarking on a search. Gold sinks deep in the bottom of this lake.
