A new trailer for Electronic Arts and Omega Forces’ upcoming monster-hunting game Wild Hearts focuses on the game’s construction and movement mechanics. Wild Hearts’ biggest challenge is differentiating it from Capcom’s hugely popular Monster Hunter series. EA has decided to go head-to-head with this challenge. The new gameplay trailer for Wild Hearts focuses on the battle with the giant wild boar Kemono and the “life-sustaining technology” needed to defeat it.
Omega Force calls it “ancient Karakuri technology,” but some fans have jokingly compared it to the built-in Fortnite. Wild Hearts players will collect materials, and with them can craft a variety of tools and battle structures. As players explore Wild Hearts, they will find new types of resources from a variety of sources. These resources can then be used to build new Karakuri, needed to take down even more challenging Kemono opponents.
The new Wild Hearts trailer is said to be a hunt against a giant cursed wild boar Kemono. But the hunt is designed to showcase how to use Karakuri during the hunt. They built a Karakuri like a helicopter and launched it into the sky on the first leg of their journey. They then used a giant crossbow to create a zipline high into the mountain. One final Karakuri, a trampoline, takes the player to a mountain top where the wild boar awaits. Three Karakuri are used to go sideways before the fight starts.
In subsequent battles, all three Karakuri previously shown are used as part of combat. Other tools, including a trebuchet-like hammer, a giant exploding door bar, a cannon that fires off beautiful fireworks and a literally giant bomb, are also included. used to control and damage the wild boar. Suffice to say, players will have a wide range of options available, allowing to fight enemies through innovative tools.
Of course, Karakuri isn’t the sole focus of the trailer. The boar boss itself is also introduced with a variety of attacks, both physical and magical. What appears to be drop-in co-op allows other players to engage in intermittent combat throughout the war. And each player has different weapons and play styles. And there are some nods to Monster Hunter regarding combat preparation and field management.
In seven minutes, the new Wild Hearts trailer works to not only show how the game delivers on the expectations of a monster hunting game, but also how the title will set itself apart. Luckily for EA and Omega Force, most of what Monster Hunter fans want is simply more monster hunting. But if Wild Hearts can improve the gameplay, storytelling and online connection, then the title will have a lot of potential.
