Tokyo Revengers has grown in popularity since the anime premiered in April 2021. The story of gang relationships and loyalty has played a major role in the success of this anime/manga series. . What the audience is interested in is whether with the success of Tokyo Revergers, the gang genre will return or not?
In the 70s and 80s of the last century, popular anime series also featured gang members as the main characters. Characters like Sukeban Deka, Hana no Asuka-gumi! and Otokogumi is one of the most famous. The rise of the genre reflects an increase in gang-related activity in Japan. During the 1960s, the yakuza and many smaller gangs were at their peak, although they rarely worked together.
Yakuza focus on profit and crime to make money, while most smaller gangs simply cause chaos for their own benefit. Due to the nature of these gangs, yakuza tend to belittle their behavior. These smaller gangs are mainly composed of teenagers and young adults, but also have some younger members. For them, breaking the law and being a thug is a way of life.
Although there are still members of these gangs today, they are not as strong as they used to be. As the groups dwindled, the popularity of these thugs’ stories began to grow. Manga, anime and even live-action series with plots revolving around the gang lifestyle have been produced and achieved certain success.
However, over the years, this genre has not been loved by many fans, especially in Japan. However, it is possible that the success of Tokyo Revengers will revive the thug genre, breathe new life into these types of storylines and return the genre to its golden age.
What do you think about whether the success of Tokyo Revergers will revive the gang genre in the future? Please leave your comments!
