In One Piece, Silvers Rayleigh is said to be Luffy’s first official teacher. Known as the “Dark King”, he was once the lieutenant of the Roger Pirates and is considered “the right hand man of the Pirate King”. After Roger died and the crew disbanded, he became a shipbuilder in the Sabaody Archipelago.
Before, the power gap between Luffy and Rayleigh was very large, but now the Straw Hats are getting additional buffs. So will he be able to defeat his teacher at the present time? Surely they will not confront each other because of contradictions, but let’s also try to analyze it!
During the Sabaody arc, Shakuyaku noted that Silvers Rayleigh is 100 times stronger than the 11 Supernovas combined. Even Admiral Kizaru had to admit that, if they were to pursue this legendary person, they would have to have a plan that had been meticulously researched months in advance.
Or when Garp was informed that Rayleigh might be in the Sabaody Archipelago, he instructed his troops that if they encountered Rayleigh, they would withdraw immediately to minimize casualties. In addition, we also saw Rayleigh being able to fight on par with Admiral Kizaru.
Rayleigh is also shown to have excellent Haki mastery, being the one who taught Luffy how to use all three types of Haki. Not only that, we also have to mention the extremely terrible physical strength that Rayleigh possesses.
There’s a moment when Rayleigh fights Kizaru in chapter 513 where he says he’s not young anymore. Like Whitebeard, Rayleigh at that time was still very strong, but compared to his peak, his speed and stamina had decreased.
Remember that Rayleigh is old now, he is known to be even older than Kaido and Big Mom. His age is revealed after the timeskip is 78, Big Mom is 68, Kaido is 59. Luffy is just starting to enter his prime. Obviously on the matter of youth Luffy can gain a great advantage. However, despite being old, Rayleigh is still a formidable opponent to anyone.
Can Luffy beat Rayleigh?
As we saw at the Wano arc, Luffy’s power is known to increase greatly. He is now able to master all three types of Haki, of which Conqueror Haki and Advanced Weapon Haki achieve “superior” levels.
Before that, many people said that the current strength of Rayleigh and Kaido is not much different. So, if Luffy had to fight Rayleigh then the outcome could be the same as when he faced Kaido. Luffy will be able to trouble Rayleigh, but can’t get past his mentor. If Luffy made the slightest mistake, Rayleigh would be able to take advantage of it and make Luffy faint. If Kaido can do this, Rayleigh can also do it.
So to defeat Rayleigh, Luffy still has to use the “council attack” as he is dealing with Kaido. Rayleigh could weaken if he was attacked by the Straw Hats and other allies of Luffy. However, Luffy’s victory percentage is still not high.
