Expected to depart in mid-2023, the tour to visit the wreck of the Titanic has an expected price of 6 billion VND for a week on the seabed.
With only 250,000 euros, equivalent to about 6 billion VND, you can dive to a depth of nearly 4,000 on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean to visit the wreck of the giant Titanic located 400 nautical miles off the coast of Canada.
OceanGate, an American tour company, has announced that it plans to open a new type of tourism, which is to see the wreck of the Titanic on the seabed. The first number of visitors will depart in May 2023 and will last for more than a week.
Stockton Rush, president of OceanGate, said exploration is essential to unearth more of the ill-fated Titanic:
““No public institution is going to fund the return of the Titanic,” Mr. Rush said. “So we had to find resources from wealthy people with a passion for adventure.”
According to what is known, at least 250 people have witnessed with their own eyes the wreck of the legendary Titanic ship lying deep on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It was not until 1985 that the body of the Titanic was discovered.
To qualify for this expensive trip, in addition to 6 billion VND, there are also many other factors needed such as: tourists must be over 18 years old, have undergone a short training course to ensure health. and can live in a submarine for a while.
OceanGate said it is urgently working with NASA to perfect the design of the world’s first submarine that can dive to a depth of nearly 4000m where the Titanic is sitting. The capacity of the ship is about 5-6 people.
However, there is a controversy about the practicality of this tour.
Paul F. Johnston, curator of maritime history at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, shared that he was not impressed with the expedition’s documentary videos and previously collected specimens. speak:
“These tourists will have to pay a lot of money to see the wreck of a ship that is a bit big.”
“I am not against this type of commercial exploitation because they do not affect or damage the wreck,” Mr. Johnston said. “And it draws attention to the underwater world and shipwrecks in general, but in my opinion, there’s not much to learn from the Titanic that we don’t know yet.”
Many people think that, more than 1500 people were killed in the Titanic accident, this trip is no different from visiting a cemetery.
Many historians and scientists have also objected to the salvage of specimens from the Titanic. Mr. Johnston was among those who wrote to the court to support the US government’s effort to stop a salvage company from trying to recover a Marconi telegraph from the wreckage.
Responding to these comments, Mr. Rush said:
“Look, the cost to visit the Titanic is only a fraction of the cost of a trip to space, and yet there are a ton of people who want to participate. Also, don’t teach the rich how to spend money.”
