In Kimetsu no Yaiba, Nichirin are special swords used by the demon slayer legion to destroy demons. They are forged from crimson sand and iron ore on Mount Yoko (陽光山 ようこうさん), meaning the mountain of Sunlight. This is the closest mountain to the sun and is illuminated by the sun all year round, so this sword can kill demons by beheading it. And with the exception of sunlight, this is currently known to be the only weapon available to kill demons in the series.
Today we take a look at 5 characters who can’t even use this weapon to destroy demons in Kimetsu no Yaiba.
Himejima Gyoumei
Himejima Gyoumei is a Demon Hunter and Rock Pillar of the Demon Slayer Team. He is recognized by Hashibira Inosuke and Kamado Tanjirou as the “Strongest Demon Hunter”. In the past, Himejima once killed a demon by fighting it. Himejima had not yet become a demon slayer at that time, but his strength was so strong that the demon could not resist his fists. Himejima also talked about this with Tanjiro in chapter 135 of the manga.
Shinazugawa Sanemi
Shinazugawa Sanemi is a Demon Hunter and Air Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps. It is revealed in chapter 168 that Sanemi Sanemi is a possessor of super rare blood, capable of intoxicating strong demons when they smell it.
Shinazugawa Sanemi often uses the crude method of killing demons that is to use sunlight to kill demons. With a crude and reckless fighting style, he survived and killed many demons. Sanemi admits that the only reason he survived was luck and the unique scent of his blood. The super rare blood caused the demons to become drunk and less focused in battles. He then immobilized the demons, waited until morning, and burned them with the sun’s rays.
Tokitou Muichiro
Tokitou Muichiro is the Hexer of the Demon Slayer Squad, he is a descendant of the Supreme Mystic Kokushibou and the legendary swordsman Tsugikuni Yoriichi. Like Himejima and Sanemi, he also had experience killing demons without Nichirin’s sword before becoming a full-fledged assassin.
Chapter 118 of the manga reveals that Muichiro has a twin brother named Yuuichirou. Unlike the good-natured Muichiro at the age of 10, Yuiichirou is cold, curt, and sarcastic. Although Muichiro’s relationship with Yuuichirou was not good, when Yuuichirou was injured by a demon, Muichiro got mad and beat the demon with all the weapons he had. He uses wooden blocks, stones, axes, hammers, sickles, and garden shears to restrain the demon. All those weapons were enough in the end to keep the demon from running away at sunrise.
Tanjiro Kamado
In chapter 2 of Kimetsu no Yaiba, even before Tanjiro trained to become a demon slayer along with Urokodaki, he and Nezuko were actually fighting a demon.
During that fight, Nezuko kicked the demon in the head. But that only makes things worse as the demon becomes a dual threat, its head and torso able to fight individually. Now while Nezuko confronts the demon’s body, Tanjiro battles its head. Even using only his ax and his hard head, Tanjiro is strong enough to inflict pain on the demon. In the end, Tanjiro was able to use the ax to hold the demon’s head against a tree trunk, making it unable to move until the sun rose.
Tamayo
In Kimetsu no Yaiba, demons can be killed by sunlight, the sword Nichirin, and the power of Kibutsuji Muzan. Kibutsuji Muzan has the ability to place a curse on any demon that soaks in his blood. If any demon dares to utter the name “Kibutsuji”, the curse will immediately be activated and kill them. Based on this, Tamayo set a trap for Susamaru in his battle with Nezuko and Tanjiro. She accidentally said Kibutsuji Muzan’s name and was brutally killed by the curse.
