Authorities in the western Japanese city of Wakayama have launched an investigation into a firefighter’s 15,000-subscriber YouTube channel after receiving an anonymous tip that one of their firefighters became a person who produces video games and posts them on his personal YouTube.

Once discovered, the firefighter’s salary was cut by 10% for violating the Local Public Service Act, which states that public servants are barred from doing second jobs.
In about 10 months, this person uploaded more than 300 videos, mostly gaming videos. As a result, he earned about 1.15 million Yen (nearly 10,000 USD, equivalent to more than 200 million VND) in advertising revenue.
Reportedly, this 33-year-old firefighter is a popular YouTuber with 15,000 followers. The videos he posts often show him playing games, which are multiplayer strategy games. Under each video, the male YouTuber also responds to fan comments.
“We don’t think it’s bad for him to be a YouTuber,” city official Hidetaka Amano told AFP. Rather, it was the advertising that the firefighter allowed to appear on his YouTuber channel that worried the authorities. They are concerned that some of the content from the ads may not match the clean image the city wants to portray.
Local officials believe that the fireman’s actions betrayed the trust of the people of Wakayama.
