Instead of living forever with a certain victory, Elly like many young people today wishes to create more laurel wreaths for themselves to continue to develop.
Recently, Esports has just begun to become popular and recognized by many people. At the 31st SEA Games held in Vietnam recently, e-sports became a medal competition for the second time. This is the clearest recognition for eSports compared to traditional sports and also a great joy and motivation for those who love and are passionate about this subject.
However, achieving success in this subject is not easy. Because in addition to skills, gamers (e-sports players) also have to bear a lot of pressure but solidarity with teammates, victory or even criticism and disparagement.
As a guest on episode 6 of the Gen Z Okela podcast series, Elly (real name Do Thanh Dat) – a professional gamer for Vietnam’s Esports team revealed all about the difficulties as well as the interesting things in the game. This profession is relatively new.

Overcoming stereotypes: “How many people succeed in playing games?”
In the past, most people who heard about “gamer” thought in a negative way, thinking that it was a person who was greedy, “addicted” to electronics and did not bring any benefits. Elly herself is also a person who has had to go through such prejudices from her family. He said that with the not-so-positive news about playing video games, parents think that it is a child’s game, does not make money and does not help society much.
“I myself still want to pursue this path, but my parents do not allow it. And neither side will sit down to settle with each other. I also understand, young passion is very difficult to convince parents to support me. So everything is natural, it takes me where I will follow, I will eventually get where I need to go,” Elly said.
In fact, professional esports players can make money, even a lot of money. Therefore, this is also one of the professions that are predicted to develop in the future. In addition, Elly also said that the difference between playing for fun and playing professionally is the desire to win. It doesn’t just stop at you playing video games for fun, in order to be role-playing, you must definitely win the highest position in competitions.
Although not really supported by her family, and received mixed opinions many times during the competition, Elly is still a player with many admirable achievements both at home and abroad. Not to mention, he is also a person who has the will to rise up, is eager to learn and wants to develop himself to the fullest. Therefore, after conquering the tournaments of a game with a high position, Elly will change to another subject to continue trying to “climb to the top”.
It can be said that gamers like Elly are working seriously and making money from their passion. Playing e-sports is also a high-intensity mental activity, labor and risk taking, not everyone can be successful. However, they have specific destinations such as proving to everyone their talent, helping their family and loved ones, so from there they focus entirely on work and self-development.
Facing the “uncertainty” to find the “safe”
Only 22 years old, but Elly continuously wins and has a good name in the e-sports village. For many, it was a success, but for Elly it was an “insecurity” about winning so much. This is also part of the reason why he decided to change the game to conquer.
“The fact that I’m winning constantly makes me bored with it is only a small part of the billions of reasons to leave. Winning does not bring me anything, when I lose, I experience many things. But if you win without knowing how to win, it will be miserable.
When it’s safe, it’s time to start having fun. It has to suffer a little to be happy, but it’s always strange to win. Because I want to find things that make me grow. And the old environment doesn’t create conditions for me to develop anymore, so I’m just looking for a brand new environment,” Elly shared.
He also frankly admits that he is an eager winner, so when he loses, he will be sad and think about what he is missing. “I used to doubt myself. But then again, if I don’t believe in me, who will believe me? I believe I can do it first, and then I believe in my teammates. And if you don’t believe it anymore, it will cause separations, no longer companionship”, Elly confided when there were times when she lost continuously, unable to keep her teammates.
A special thing Elly is very typical of Generation Z is passion, talent and “blood” of war. He is also very understanding about the profession he pursues and in fact Elly said: “You have to have the mindset to become number 1. I have been in this profession for a long time, so I understand the money I earn. Only about 100 people earn money, the rest are poor. Even 100 people is a bit too much, probably only about 50 people. So if you are still worried about money, you must consider it. So it’s very difficult for such a difficult road without the mindset to become number one.”
For Elly, winning or losing in a match brings exciting experiences. If you win, you also need to lose in order to experience it yourself. If you are young, if you live without experiencing it all, it will be very boring, and if you are bored, you should go find something new to do. Elly also affirmed that if his ego is still high in the future, he will look to a larger “pool” to get more interesting things.
