The director of The Callisto Protocol, one of the original creators of Dead Space, hinted at the game’s gore.
In the sci-fi horror game genre, The Callisto Protocol has been compared by many to Electronic Arts’ Dead Space series of horror games. However, Striking Distance Studios is looking to differentiate the game, and they’ve discussed how they plan to do it, such as a new game that will focus on melee combat more. One area where it looks different from Dead Space is the gore violence, which, according to the game’s director, will be significantly more gruesome than the three Dead Space titles.
The Callisto Protocol takes gamers to Jupiter’s moon Callisto in the year 2320, where there is a prison colony called Black Iron of the United Jupiter Company. Players will take on the role of Jacob Lee, played by Josh Duhamel, who is one of the many prisoners living inside the prison complex. However, while life in the prison is not over yet, an alien invasion has turned the colony into chaos, filled with mysterious creatures that have begun to roam the place destroying the living. omission.
As the game is set for a holiday release in 2022, the team at Striking Distance Studios has slowly pulled back the curtain on the title to give gamers a taste of the horrors that await in Black Iron. Glen Schofield, game director and one of the studio’s founders, spoke at length with Eurogamer about Striking Distance Studios’ approach to this debut title and its comparisons to Dead Space. Schofield mentioned the gore of The Callisto Protocol compared to Dead Space as follows:
“The game has some pretty gruesome moments, really. We have our own set of tools for doing violent gore scenes – we built the Gore technology. It renders a lot of images, and you can crush characters by jumping, cutting their parts with exposed bones, and all sorts of other violence. Then there were the renderers, who did special things to make everything in the game look bloody and steamy. And so every character is done that way – no matter how you look at it, the chunks of flesh breaking off, or parts of the face, parts of the head, it’s too advanced for Dead. Space. “
Dead Space when released in 2008 was considered extremely bloody at the time, thanks to the game’s creatures known as Necromorphs and what players had to do to defeat them. As the name suggests, Necromorphs are human corpses that have been horribly transformed and brought back to life by mysterious markings. Players will need to use “split tactics” to defeat the creatures, cutting off the limbs of Necromorphs until they lie down. The Dead Space sequels have built on this, adding in the death animations that Isaac Clarke can suffer if the player fails at any time.
The gameplay trailers for The Callisto Protocol released so far have indeed shown that players will have a very bloody experience. For example, the creature design is extremely gruesome as the monsters that roam the corridors of Black Iron have clearly visible muscles, tendons, and bones. Jacob Lee’s survival won’t be easy either, with some of his deaths as bloody as any creature Lee encounters.
