One of the first games confirmed to feature during Geoff Keighley’s Gamescom Opening Night Live event is Return to Monkey Island.
With June’s seemingly endless stream of gaming events coming to an end, all eyes have turned to the next big event, Gamescom – this year will run from August 24 to August 29. one of Europe’s biggest live gaming events. Opening Gamescom will be Geoff Keighley’s annual Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, which will be held with announcements and revelations about the game. One of Gamescom ONL’s first games has now been confirmed as Return to Monkey Island.
The announcement was made directly by Keighley on his Twitter account. Keighley told his followers to check out Gamescom Opening Night Live and they’ll get a new look at Return to Monkey Island. It’s unclear whether the new trailer will focus on the story or will provide a glimpse into the game’s gameplay. All that is certain is that a new trailer will be introduced as part of the Gamescom event.
Return to Monkey Island was announced in April earlier this year. It is the sequel to the Monkey Island game released over 30 years ago and is confirmed to be the third installment in the series. Furthermore, Return to Monkey Island is being developed by two of the original creators of the Monkey Island series. Ron Gilbert is the original game director of The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2. Dave Grossman, a writer and designer for the two Monkey Island games, is also back.
What Monkey Island fans will be hoping for at Gamescom is the final release date for the new product. The announcements prior to Monkey Island’s return had said the game would launch in 2022, but left a specific date in the process of continued development. It is possible that publisher Devolver Digital and the development team are now confident in the state of the game and ready for the release date.
While Return to Monkey Island was one of the first games confirmed for Gamescom Opening Night Live, it wasn’t the only one. Other games confirmed for the show include Goat Simulator 3, Sonic Frontiers, and a new sci-fi title from Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds. Also expect more announcements in the coming days and weeks.
