Nowadays, some excellent manhwa are getting the anime adaptations they deserve. While there's still a long way to go before the idea of adapting webtoons into anime becomes the norm, the following examples are a great way to show that this movement is on the rise.
Below are attractive anime adapted from Korean manhwa:
10. Viral Hit (Spring 2024 anime)
MyAnimeList score: 6.87
Viral Hit was just released in the Spring 2024 anime series. The plot of this manhwa series revolves around the issue of school violence, a very painful problem in Korea. If you are a fan of fighting and martial arts series, you absolutely should not miss this anime.
9. The Girl Downstairs
MyAnimeList score: 7.60
Technically, the adaptation of The Girl Downstairs is not an anime because it was handled by a Chinese studio. However, it still deserves a mention because it is among the fascinating animated adaptations of manhwa. The story revolves around the romance between college freshman Joon and his idol Duna.
The show does a great job of encouraging viewers to care about the main couple's burgeoning relationship, while also providing some insight into idol culture.
8. Noblesse
MyAnimeList score: 6.89
Crunchyroll recently took the great initiative of adapting popular manhwa into anime to help new fans get into the medium. One of their most popular adaptations is Noblesse.
The series is about an aristocrat named Cadis Etrama Di Raizel – or Rai for short – who has been asleep for 820 years and is unaware of the technological advances humanity has recently experienced. After waking up in an abandoned building in Korea, he enrolls in high school and fights against a powerful corporation, which sounds ridiculous and exciting.
7. Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady With The Lamp
MyAnimeList score: 7.33
Although overshadowed by another manhwa anime adaptation in Winter 2024, Doctor Elise is a pretty good manhwa anime adaptation in its own right, and also a pretty good entry in the genre isekai.
In a cute plot twist, the main character, originally from a fantasy kingdom, is reincarnated on Earth and decides to become a doctor to make up for his previous life. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes and Elise dies prematurely, causing her to reincarnate into her former self.
6. A Returner's Magic Should Be Special
MyAnimeList score: 7.10
Debuting in a season full of fantasy anime, A Returner's Magic Should Be Special was cast aside as it struggled to stand out from the crowd. While not surprising, this series has some positives, including a strong set-up that is well presented in the first episode.
Faced with an apocalyptic threat, Desir, a powerful magician, stands by a few chosen heroes as humanity's last hope. Unfortunately, they fail, but the protagonist gets a second chance when he reincarnates into a younger version of himself as he prepares to enter Hebrion Academy.
5. The God Of High School
MyAnimeList score: 7.07
MAPPA is one of the best animation studios today. So, their adaptation of one of the most popular manhwa series will definitely make fans excited to no end. Their production The God of High School is a brilliant combination of animation, music and storytelling for a captivating viewing experience.
Additionally, fans have also criticized the film for skipping a lot of world-building, resulting in a series of pretty fights without much of a plot to give these encounters weight. This results in the show simply adapting the incredible battles without paying attention to the emotions that drive those encounters, creating a rather bland spectacle in the eyes of many.
4. Why Raeliana Ended Up At The Duke's Mansion
MyAnimeList score: 7.50
The anime Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion has a few elements changed slightly compared to the manhwa to make it easier to understand for Japanese audiences.
The story follows modern-day Eunha Park who is accidentally reincarnated in a novel as a supporting character. Unfortunately, in this novel Eunha Park is not only a supporting character but also plays the victim and is poisoned to death.
3. Lookism
MyAnimeList score: 7.48
Lookism is a fairly popular webtoon that has been around for almost a decade, publishing 20 volumes in the process. Lookism follows Park Hyung Suk, a teenager who is constantly bullied because of his appearance. One day, he randomly wakes up in another body, and has a new life at school.
2. Tower Of God
MyAnimeList score: 7.55
It would be impossible to talk about excellent anime adaptations of manhwa without mentioning the phenomenon of Tower of God. With the existing popularity from the original work, the anime version has achieved great success and was broadcast on television in Korea and Japan.
Unfortunately, after a successful season 1, there is still no information about season 2 getting the green light.
1. Solo Leveling
MyAnimeList score: 8.46
Solo Leveling is one of the most hyped Anime of Winter 2024 and has achieved many remarkable achievements.
From the manhwa to the anime adaptation, it is mainly driven by action scenes and most of these sequences are overall excellent. While Sung has all the makings of a strong protagonist, he is still frequently tested by monsters and other hunters, creating the conditions for thrilling battles that are both satisfying and tense.
